Hermanus is the fastest growing town in the Overberg region and is the rightful hub of the vast municipal area.  Strandlopers have known about the fresh water spring here for years, but it was Hermanus Pieters who put the area on the map in the early 1800s.  Perched on rocky cliffs, the coastal town is situated on the Cape’s south peninsula and being just 100km from Cape Town itself, the area has burgeoned into a lively tourist destination.

Hermanus is located in the heart of South Africa’s whale route and this seaside resort is known to offer some of the best land-based whale watching in the world.  There is a cliff path stretching from one side of town to other, covering some 12km of the Walker Bay coastline and this gives whale enthusiasts the opportunity to study these magnificent creatures from within 20 metres.  The Old Harbour Museum houses telescopes that make it possible to scan the entire coastal area and see dolphins and whales at close range.

Another of Hermanus’ interesting attractions is the whale crier, who keeps visitors informed as to the whereabouts of the whales and is the only known whale crier in the world.  The sound of his kelp horn simply adds to the rustic charm of this ever-popular seaside resort.  Those who own property here are blessed with panoramic ocean views, stunning landscape and have the added benefit of whale sightings from the comfort of their own balconies during whale season.

The Fernkloof Nature Reserve is located just outside Hermanus and the area is covered in indigenous fynbos, offering a number of excellent hiking or walking trails with spectacular views.  The town has a variety of activities to keep locals and visitors happy, including boats to charter, art galleries to peruse, whales to watch, sport to play, salons to be pampered in, not to mention wine tasting on some of the outlying farms.  With such a wealth of natural beauty and entertainment, it’s no wonder that property in Hermanus is so sought after.
